Lilysse (リュリーティス), sometimes called Lily, is a Saint in Nights of Azure who is destined to seal what remains of the Nightlord. She is also Arnice's lover and long-time friend.

Appearance[]

Lilysse is a busty woman of average height with wavy ginger hair that reaches her waist and a braid to the side in a bun. She has amber eyes, and her attire consists of a three-layered ruffled and sleeveless magenta dress with golden accents. It is held together by the bow on her left hip which wraps around her waist, overtop of which is a small off-white, open-front cardigan. A second white lace and cropped cardigan is worn over that, having a dark-brown lace loop attached to the left sleeve. The outfit is completed with brown stockings, a pair of white lace high heels, flower ornamented bracelets, and a dark brown flower in her hair.

When visited at the Ende Hotel her attire changes slightly to include a maid's apron and headpiece. She also has a pinkish nightgown that she wears to bed, as well as when manifested in the Dream World. She can briefly seen wearing an academy uniform alongside Arnice during flashbacks.

Personality[]

Lilysse is a kind and gentle lady. She cares for the people closest to her and is willing to even sacrifice her own life to protect them. She is quite stubborn at times when it involves Arnice's safety and her duties as the current Saint. Despite her good nature, she is extraordinarily clumsy, leading to frequent accidental property damage.

Compared to her partner, Lilysse is more traditionally feminine, having interests in women's fashion, makeup, and jewelry, as well as certain species of plants and animals. While she is passive in some regards, she is not at all shy to voice her feelings or show them physically through hugs and even tackling Arnice at times.

As the Saint whose fate it is to seal the remains of the Nightlord, Lilysse must sacrifice her life to do it. She accepted her destiny with the Curia's expectations of her in mind, but also for the good of all living things in the world. In spite of Arnice's stern disapproval, Lilysse remains determined to fulfill her duty and save the world.

History[]

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. Read at your own discretion.

Nights of Azure[]

Early Life[]

Having grown up in a world constantly on the brink of chaos due to the threat of Fiends, Lilysse was accustomed to seeing the horrific consequences of the Blue Blood since a young age. Despite this, her heart remained soft and honest, leading to her eventual good-natured attitude. Her compassion led her to pursue a career as a Curia priestess.

Awakening Feelings[]

One fateful day while napping in the courtyard of the Curia's most prestigious academy for Saint candidates, Lilysse was awakened by an unfamiliar voice. Upon opening her eyes, she was met with the most beautiful face she had ever beheld. Flustered and groggy, she struggled to maintain her footing and ended up making a fool of herself, tripping and falling. However, the girl who woke her up, Arnice, seemed more intrigued and amused than repulsed by the blunder. The pair steadily grew to know each other as time went on, and despite a couple of awkward moments of Lilysse striking a nerve with Arnice, they got along just fine. Eventually, while out together gathering materials and too busy to stop for a break, the two made a promise to return to a shop that had caught Lilysse's eye.

Blood and Truth[]

As night fell after the pair had made their promise, Lilysse realized that she had forgotten one item. Determined to let Arnice rest after she had done most of the heavy lifting that day, Lilysse went alone to correct the mistake. That, however, would prove to be an even worse mistake, as she would quickly be set upon by the creatures of the night: Fiends. Though she was not struck, she fainted in fear of the imminent attack.

Despite passing out mere moments before, she awoke to the sound of a familiar voice crying out. A flash of silver and a burst of blue filled her sight, and as she recognized the flowing white hair of the woman protecting her, she called out her name. Unfortunately, the sudden outburst distracted her savior, causing Arnice to narrowly avoid an attack and be forced to counterattack at close range, dousing her in Blue Blood. Though shocked, Lilysse was swiftly assured that no harm would come to Arnice as she explained her nature as a Half-Demon. The truth had come out, along with Arnice's true role: protecting Lilysse as a Saint candidate's Holy Knight. The next few days would be awkward between the two, but Lilysse was not afraid of Arnice's secret. Soon, she would break the silence.

Saint Festival[]

Despite such a significant revelation introducing itself into her life recently, Lilysse was her usual carefree self on the day of the festival. Life would not wait, after all, and she had to make a good impression. Besides, it was a perfect day to bridge the gap between the two in question. After having gotten dressed for the occasion and helping everyone she could with preparations, she came up to Arnice and greeted her eagerly, reminding her of the promise the two had made.

After waiting a small while in the academy's lobby, Arnice fulfilled her end of the deal by agreeing to come with Lilysse. They would soon after stop by the promised cafe, chatting casually despite Arnice still being fairly tense. It was then that Lilysse revealed her determination to become a priestess, emboldened by Arnice's fiery passion and bravery shown that fateful night. Arnice protested at first, but after Lilysse had explained her appreciation for Arnice having saved her life as well as potential for supporting Arnice directly, she reluctantly agreed that they would be safer together rather than apart.

Ms. Priestess[]

The distance having closed between the two girls, the future had begun to open up to them both. Soon, Lilysse would achieve her goal, and she would be directed to meet a Holy Knight holding a black letter beneath a large tree on a tall hill. Narrowly avoiding tripping over her own feet and the tall grass on her way there, she spotted her escort. Their eyes met, and as if meeting Lilysse for the first time, the smiling woman in red stood and smiled politely. "Nice to meet you, Ms. Priestess," she spoke. Lilysse couldn't help but smile back as they locked hands, interlacing their fingers together.

Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon[]

While Lilysse is not physically present in Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon, she still plays a large role in its events, particularly with respect to Arnice. After Arnice and Lilysse had won their freedom from the corrupt Curia, it would be quickly upended with the rampage of the Moon Queen, Malvasia. Though Arnice herself was virtually indestructible to any demon, she had a critical weakness: Lilysse. Once the Moon Queen had set her sights on the new Nightlord's human lover, their short time of peace would come to end. Having been taken hostage by Malvasia, Lilysse was completely helpless to save Arnice from her fate. While neither of them would die from the defeat, Lilysse heard talk of the inhumane treatment of her captured partner, and later, whispers of a terrifying demon running rampant across the lands. Since she was forced to stay in hiding for fear of recapture or death, the two were tragically separated for decades. Only after regaining cognition thanks to the efforts of Aluche Anatoria, and the subsequent defeat of the Moon Queen, would Arnice finally return home to her beloved.

Relationships[]

  • Arnice - Lilysse's closest friend since boarding school. She cares for Arnice and often worries about her safety during her missions. Their relationship is dynamic throughout the events of the first game depending on the player's choices, ranging from distant acquaintances with only a familiar past, to inseparable soulmates who would defy the world for each other. Despite Arnice being the more traditionally active and assertive of the two, Lilysse is always the one to make the first move when it comes to their relationship.
  • Simon - Lilysse requested Simon to allow her to work at the hotel during her free time from her Saint duties. Simon assigned her as the cafe's waitress. Their relationship is strictly professional in nature, a status only aided by Simon's fear of Lilysse's clumsiness and questionable baking skills ruining his hotel's reputation.
  • Professor Alucard - Though the two scarcely interact, the man rightfully fears Lilysse's baked "goods." Professionally speaking, Alucard sees no use in studying the human Lilysse, and is much more interested in Arnice's demonic nature.
  • Lloyd - Despite his womanizing ways, Lloyd is rarely able to bother Lilysse due to Arnice's over-protectiveness. Largely oblivious to any male attention, Lilysse gets along with Lloyd plainly well, treating him as a simple customer.
  • Ludegert - As the Pope of the Curia and the Last Saint, they have an important organizational relationship. However, they never meet directly until the final chapter, where they are adversaries.

Trivia[]

  • Lilysse has an interest in dolls, having one named Pepe as a keepsake.
  • Lilysse's voice actress, Hiromi Igarashi, sings the true ending credits song of Nights of Azure, "Eve," alongside Arnice's voice actress, M·A·O.
  • Seeing as the Ring of Divine Protection present in Nights of Azure 2 was given to Lilysse by Arnice as a testament to their love, it can be inferred that they were wed shortly after the ending of Nights of Azure.
  • In Dead or Alive 5 Last Round Gust collaboration, if the player chooses Tina Armstrong - the option to pick Lilysse's costume will be available under Costume 49.
